The brooch features an elegant openwork composition formed from finely worked ornamental gold wire, creating an intricate and graceful design characteristic of Edwardian jewellery. The symmetrical arrangement gives the piece a light, refined appearance while showcasing the craftsmanship of the period. At the centre is a claw-set old cut diamond, providing a subtle point of brilliance against the warm tones of the yellow gold. The hand-cut character of the diamond complements the delicacy of the surrounding filigree work beautifully. Fully hallmarked for Chester 1903, the brooch also bears the maker’s mark for Richard Nevill, providing both a precise date and maker attribution. The Chester hallmark is particularly appealing to collectors of British antique jewellery, as the historic Chester Assay Office ceased operations in 1962. An elegant and highly wearable example of early 20th-century English jewellery, combining 15ct yellow gold, an old cut diamond and beautifully executed Edwardian filigree work.
