The composition presents the figure lying across dark bedding, her body rendered with substantial modelling, earthy flesh tones and an intentionally unidealised approach to the human form. The artist has concentrated particularly on the weight, volume and tonal variations of the body, using layered passages of cream, ochre, pink and brown to create a strong sense of physical presence. The dark surrounding fabric provides a dramatic contrast, drawing the eye directly toward the illuminated figure and heightening the intimacy of the composition. An unusual still-life detail appears in the foreground, where a small plate containing two eggs rests beside the figure. Together with the partially visible surface beneath it, this element introduces a quiet domestic note to an otherwise psychologically charged composition. The painting is presented within an elaborate rococo-style gilt frame, its scrolling foliate ornament providing an intriguing contrast to the uncompromising modern treatment of the nude. A bold and visually arresting work, well suited to collectors of modern figurative painting, contemporary interpretations of the nude and works influenced by the british school of post-war realism.
