This substantial fireplace is distinguished by its generous proportions and exceptionally crisp decorative casting throughout, demonstrating the quality of British architectural ironwork produced during the late Victorian period. The integrated combination design brings together the mantel, surround and fire opening within a single imposing architectural composition. Richly modelled ornamentation and sharply defined cast details give the fireplace considerable depth and decorative presence. An original registration number dates the design to 1890, providing an important historical reference and confirming its late 19th-century origin. The fireplace has undergone a comprehensive professional refurbishment. Historic layers of paint were painstakingly removed by hand rather than through shot blasting, helping to preserve the integrity of the cast iron surface and the exceptional definition of its original decoration. Following stripping, the entire fireplace was carefully wire brushed to both the front and reverse. Traditional grate polish was then applied and buffed by brush, producing a rich dark gunmetal finish that beautifully highlights the crispness and depth of the Victorian castings.
