The fireplace displays a refined neoclassical influence, with graceful floral swags and ribboned bows finely cast across the frieze. The restrained uprights provide an attractive architectural contrast to the more elaborate decoration above, creating a balanced and sophisticated composition. Particularly noteworthy is the original double-skinned mantel top. This important period component has been retained rather than replaced with a later reproduction, preserving the integrity and authenticity of the original fireplace. An authentic registration number dates the design to 1907. The surround was reclaimed from a period property in reading, berkshire, providing additional provenance and historical interest. With no rear projection, the fireplace can sit flush against a flat wall or be installed around an existing chimney breast opening. This versatile configuration also makes it particularly suitable for use around a properly installed wood-burning stove. The fireplace has undergone a comprehensive professional refurbishment. Historic layers of paint were painstakingly removed by hand rather than through shot blasting, helping to protect the cast iron surface and preserve the exceptional definition of the original ornament. Following stripping, the entire fireplace was carefully wire brushed to both the front and reverse. Traditional grate polish was then applied and buffed to produce a rich gunmetal appearance that beautifully accentuates the crisp swags, bows and architectural details. The reverse has also been professionally prepared and spray painted, ensuring that the fireplace has been fully refurbished from front to back. A particularly attractive example of early 20th-century british architectural ironwork, combining documented 1907 dating, original components, berkshire provenance and elegant edwardian decoration.
