The fall-front opens to form a practical writing surface lined in green velvet, revealing a carefully arranged interior incorporating numerous small drawers and storage compartments. Of particular interest is the concealed well, an ingenious feature characteristic of sophisticated writing furniture of the period. Below the writing section are four drawers arranged as two smaller drawers above two full-width drawers, providing generous additional storage. The drawers are fitted with brass handles and fittings that complement the warm tones and aged character of the oak. The bureau is raised upon sturdy bracket feet, giving the piece a strong and well-balanced architectural presence. The oak displays an attractive natural grain, deep colour and beautifully developed patina acquired over more than three centuries. The bureau is accompanied by its key and presents as a particularly handsome example of early English cabinet furniture. Its combination of concealed storage, fitted writing interior and compact proportions makes it both historically interesting and highly decorative. Presented in excellent antique condition considering its considerable age, with appropriate variations and signs of use consistent with a genuine late 17th-century piece.
