A substantial abstract art glass sculpture by British glass artist Allister Malcolm, signed and dating to circa 2013.
Weighing approximately 5.8 kg, this impressive work combines thick sand-cast glass with richly coloured inclusions and areas of luminous gold leaf, mounted upon a large sculptural glass base.
The composition has an organic, almost landscape-like quality. Sweeping black linear elements travel through the glass alongside layers of blue, gold and earth-toned colour, creating an impression reminiscent of moving water, waves and reflected sunlight.
Generous applications of gold leaf appear suspended within the transparent glass, catching and reflecting the surrounding light and giving the sculpture a constantly changing visual character.
The sand-cast upper section is supported by a substantial opaque glass formation resembling a natural rock or boulder. This contrasting base gives the work considerable visual and physical presence while reinforcing its elemental character, balancing the transparency and luminosity of the upper glass against the solidity of its foundation.
Malcolm is closely associated with the historic glassmaking tradition of Stourbridge in the English West Midlands and is recognised for contemporary works employing traditional glassmaking processes. His abstract compositions frequently explore the interaction between colour, texture, transparency and light.
Sand casting is a particularly demanding sculptural glassmaking technique in which molten glass is poured into a prepared mould formed from compacted sand. Colour, glass frit and decorative materials such as metal leaf can be incorporated during the process, producing richly layered compositions with individual variations that make each finished work distinctive.
The substantial proportions, extensive gold-leaf decoration and highly sculptural form make this an especially decorative example of Malcolm's work. Designed to be appreciated from different viewpoints and under changing light conditions, it makes a striking centrepiece for a console, table, pedestal or contemporary art-glass collection.
