The substantial cast iron body provides an elegant architectural frame around the central fire opening, while the original tiles introduce colour, pattern and visual interest. Their survival is particularly desirable, preserving the integrity and authentic period character of the fireplace. Reclaimed from a period property in bruntsfield, edinburgh, the insert has undergone a comprehensive professional refurbishment. The cast iron has been carefully cleaned and restored throughout, including the reverse of the fireplace, which has also been professionally cleaned, prepared and spray painted. This ensures a complete restoration rather than simply refinishing the visible front surfaces. The fireplace has been finished using traditional black grate polish and carefully buffed to produce an attractive gunmetal to pewter appearance. This traditional treatment beautifully highlights the depth and crispness of the original cast decoration while retaining the character expected of an antique fireplace. The contrast between the dark metallic cast iron and original decorative tiles gives the piece considerable visual presence and makes it an impressive architectural focal point. A particularly attractive example of antique architectural salvage, combining original cast iron construction, original ceramic tiles, edinburgh provenance and a professionally restored finish.
