The restrained architectural form is enriched with finely cast classical ornament, including graceful floral swags and ribboned bows across the frieze. These decorative elements are particularly well defined and provide an elegant contrast to the clean lines of the uprights. A notable feature is the substantial double-skinned serpentine mantel shelf, whose gently curved profile gives the fireplace additional sculptural presence. Importantly, this is the original cast iron mantel top rather than a later replacement, preserving the integrity and authenticity of the period design. With no rear projection, the surround can sit flush against a flat wall or be positioned around an existing chimney breast opening. Its open configuration also makes it particularly suitable for incorporation around a suitably installed wood-burning stove. Reclaimed from a period property in seven dials, brighton, the fireplace retains discreet mounting lugs to the outer body for straightforward and secure installation. The entire surround has undergone a comprehensive professional refurbishment. Historic layers of paint were painstakingly removed by hand rather than through shot blasting, helping to preserve the original surface and crisp definition of the cast decoration. Following stripping, the cast iron was carefully wire brushed to both the front and reverse before being finished with traditional grate polish and buffed to reveal a rich gunmetal appearance. The reverse has also been professionally prepared and spray painted, completing the restoration from front to back. A particularly attractive example of edwardian architectural ironwork, combining elegant classical decoration, an unusual original serpentine mantel and desirable brighton provenance.
