Marchand was particularly known for animal and historical subjects, and this work displays the loose yet accomplished handling characteristic of his equestrian paintings. The chestnut horse dominates the composition, its form and colouring carefully observed while the freer brushwork gives the painting a sense of movement and immediacy. Marchand's academic training provided him with a strong command of draughtsmanship and animal anatomy, qualities that are particularly evident in his studies of horses. His combination of realism with a more fluid painterly technique gives his sporting works a distinctive character. The painting is signed and dated lower left and is presented in a decorative frame. A particularly appealing example of early 20th-century French sporting art, well suited to a collection of equestrian, horse racing or European animal paintings. About André Marchand André Marchand (1877–1951) was a French painter specialising in animal and historical subjects. Born in Paris on 22 November 1877, he studied under Léon Bonnat, Édouard Detaille and Édouard Toudouze. He subsequently exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, becoming a member in 1898 and receiving an honourable mention the following year. Marchand received further recognition with medals in 1904 and 1920, and in 1908 was awarded a travelling grant. His work is characterised by accomplished draughtsmanship combined with a relatively loose and lively painting technique, particularly effective in his depictions of horses and other animals.
