Very well made and of fine quality, this rare cupboard is an impressive example of early English cabinetmaking, combining practical storage with ingenious construction and a wealth of authentic period detail. The front is enclosed by two doors incorporating a particularly interesting locking arrangement. The doors are secured and released using an unusual metal pin mechanism inserted from the top, providing a fascinating insight into the practical craftsmanship employed in the construction of the piece. Opening the doors reveals a wonderfully fitted interior containing five drawers, thoughtfully arranged with three smaller drawers positioned above two larger examples. This configuration provides useful organised storage while adding considerably to the architectural character of the interior. Each drawer retains its original handles and fittings, while the cupboard also retains its original hand-forged hinges. These surviving early features contribute significantly to the character and historical interest of the piece. Raised on sturdy square legs, the cupboard has a restrained and well-balanced silhouette. The simplicity of its external form allows the quality of the construction, beautifully matured oak and unusual fitted interior to take centre stage. The oak has developed tremendous character over the centuries, displaying gorgeous natural grain, rich colouring and a superb timeworn patina throughout. The variations and signs of historic use across the surfaces contribute to the authenticity and individual character of this early piece. Its combination of a fitted five-drawer interior, original handles and fittings, hand-forged hinges and unusual pin-operated door mechanism makes this a particularly interesting example of early furniture construction.

Measuring 90 cm wide and 81.5 cm high, the cupboard retains surprisingly manageable proportions for a piece offering such substantial visual presence and historical interest.
