The cylindrical body is formed from individual oak staves in the manner of traditional barrel construction, giving the piece a wonderfully rustic yet architectural appearance. Substantial iron bands encircle the body, providing both structural reinforcement and an attractive contrast against the warm tones of the oak. Decorative brass elements introduce a further refined detail and enhance the planter's distinctive period character. Particularly appealing is the naturally aged surface, with the oak displaying attractive grain, rich colour and a mature patina developed through generations of age and use. The aged metalwork complements the timber beautifully and contributes to the authentic character of the piece. Very well constructed and presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its 19th-century origin. A rare and highly decorative object, suitable for use as a planter, jardinière or decorative vessel. Its compact proportions and sculptural form make it particularly effective within a country-house, traditional or eclectic contemporary interior.
