An exceptional English hand-carved solid oak refectory table, dating to 1936 and retaining its original brass presentation plaque recording its history at Beauchief Baptist Church. A remarkably substantial and decorative piece, the table is distinguished by the quality and extent of its carved ornamentation. The deep frieze is richly worked with continuous floral and foliate motifs, complemented by carved borders and substantial bulbous supports displaying further hand-worked decoration. The table stands on a traditional refectory-style base, with the imposing carved supports joined by a substantial central stretcher and terminating in broad shaped feet. Combined with the thick rectangular oak top, the construction gives the table considerable weight, solidity and architectural presence. Of particular interest is the original brass memorial plaque mounted centrally to the carved frieze, recording that the table was presented to Beauchief Baptist Church in January 1936 in loving remembrance of Richard Main. This surviving inscription provides the piece with a tangible history and elevates it beyond a purely decorative revival table. The oak has developed a wonderfully warm colour, pronounced grain and attractive aged surface, while the elaborate carving gives the table strong Jacobean and Renaissance Revival influences.
At 114.5 cm wide, its proportions make it particularly versatile. It could serve as an intimate dining table, library or writing table, substantial hall or centre table, or an impressive statement piece within a country house or period interior. Presented in very good antique condition overall, remaining heavy, solid and structurally sound. Historic marks, rubbing, surface wear and other imperfections are present to the top, edges and frame, consistent with approximately 90 years of age and use.
