An exceptional and unusually designed antique cast iron fireplace surround dating from the late victorian to early edwardian period, distinguished by a remarkable central frieze depicting angels riding upon a chariot. The surround combines elegant, restrained architectural proportions with an elaborate figurative centrepiece. Simple clean-lined uprights support the mantel shelf, directing attention toward the beautifully cast central frieze, where the dramatic chariot scene provides an unusual and highly decorative focal point. The rarity of the design is particularly noteworthy. According to the previous specialist dealer, an example of this particular fireplace pattern had not been encountered during approximately 45 years working within the antique fireplace trade. Reclaimed from a period property in rochford, england, the fireplace is constructed from substantial solid cast iron and retains an attractive aged patina. The surround has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration. Historic surface coatings were carefully stripped before the cast iron was thoroughly cleaned and given a protective treatment. Traditional grate polish was subsequently applied and buffed to reveal the depth and exceptional definition of the original decorative casting. The reverse has also been professionally prepared and painted, ensuring that the fireplace has been fully refurbished from front to back. With no significant rear projection, the surround is particularly versatile and may be positioned against a flat wall or installed around an existing chimney breast opening, making it especially suitable for use in conjunction with a wood-burning stove or complementary fireplace insert. Mounting lugs are incorporated into the outer body to facilitate secure installation. Presented in excellent restored condition, this is a highly distinctive example of british architectural ironwork, combining elegant proportions, an exceptionally unusual figurative frieze and the substantial craftsmanship associated with late victorian and edwardian cast iron production.
