The design incorporates classical Victorian detailing, with circular paterae positioned to either side of the arch, subtle moulded decoration and a stepped architectural frieze beneath the generously proportioned mantel. The restrained ornamentation and strong symmetry give the fireplace an impressive yet versatile appearance suitable for a wide variety of period interiors. Currently finished in white paint, the fireplace retains an attractive aged appearance with visible wear, losses and marks to the painted surface consistent with age and previous use. The cast iron itself remains in good, solid condition, making this an excellent candidate for restoration or for installation with its existing distressed finish. The rear of the arched opening projects approximately 2.5 cm and may therefore need to be recessed into the surrounding plasterwork during installation. A handsome and generously sized original Victorian architectural feature that would make an impressive focal point within a drawing room, reception room, bedroom or period restoration project.
