Benson / … Read more A rare and highly decorative english arts & crafts table lamp dating to circa 1908, attributed to w.a.s. Benson / morris & co., combining beautifully aged wrought brass with a striking green vaseline glass shade. The lamp has an elegant tripod or “fishing rod” inspired construction, with a slender curved brass support rising from the base to suspend the bell-shaped glass shade. The restrained, functional construction and emphasis on honest materials are strongly characteristic of british arts & crafts lighting of the period. Its most distinctive feature is the uranium-green vaseline glass shade, whose translucent colour provides an attractive contrast against the naturally aged brass. The combination of sculptural metalwork and coloured glass gives the lamp considerable decorative presence despite its relatively compact proportions. Period materials and fittings include wrought brass, bakelite and ceramic components, together with a b22 bayonet-fit bulb holder. The lamp has been professionally rewired and tested and is in working order, while retaining the aged surface and patination expected of an antique piece. An elegant collector's light suitable for an arts & crafts, art nouveau or aesthetic movement interior, as well as a desk, library, bedside table or curated decorative collection.
