The work belongs to Girardet's accomplished body of European genre painting, in which landscape and narrative are brought together with careful attention to atmosphere, figures and the natural environment. The sporting subject reflects the established 19th-century tradition of depicting hunting and country pursuits while displaying the artist's academic training and accomplished handling of oil paint. At 92 cm wide before framing and 120 cm overall, the painting has substantial decorative presence. Its generous proportions, combined with the original frame, make it particularly well suited to a traditional country-house interior, library, study or collection of European sporting art. The painting is signed by Jules Girardet at the lower left and is presented in its original frame. About Jules Girardet Jules Girardet (1856–1946) was born in Versailles into a prominent artistic family of Swiss origin. His father, Paul Girardet, was an established artist, and Jules grew up surrounded by painting and printmaking. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel, one of the leading French academic painters of the 19th century. Girardet developed a varied practice encompassing historical and genre painting, landscapes, murals, watercolours and pastels. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, receiving a third-class medal in 1881. His work was also recognised at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, and he exhibited extensively in Switzerland. Girardet's paintings entered a number of European museum collections, reflecting the recognition he achieved during his lifetime. His work combines the technical discipline of French academic painting with a strong interest in narrative, landscape and everyday life.
