Wardle was one of the foremost British animal painters of the late Victorian and early 20th-century periods and was particularly admired for his ability to portray animals with remarkable character and naturalism. The substantial canvas measures approximately 40 x 30 inches (101 x 76 cm) and is presented in an ornate gold-leaf frame, bringing the overall dimensions to approximately 50 x 40 inches (127 x 102 cm). The painting is signed “Arthur Wardle” lower left. Wardle was born in London in 1864 and demonstrated considerable artistic ability from an exceptionally early age. At just sixteen, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, beginning a long association with the institution that would see him exhibit more than 100 works there during his career. Largely self-taught, Wardle became particularly renowned for animal and sporting subjects. His repertoire was remarkably broad, encompassing domestic dogs, horses and livestock as well as exotic animals including tigers, leopards and polar bears. For the latter, he frequently worked from sketches made during visits to London Zoo. Wardle worked successfully in oils, watercolours and pastels. He was elected to the Pastel Society in 1911 and became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1922. His works were exhibited extensively at leading British institutions and galleries, including the Royal Academy, Fine Art Society, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Royal Society of British Artists and Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Today, Wardle remains particularly sought after for his accomplished animal subjects, which combine anatomical observation with a strong sense of movement and atmosphere.
