A striking late 20th-century patinated bronze table lamp, attributed to maitland-smith, distinguished by its sculptural acanthus-leaf decoration and architectural form inspired by 19th-century decorative arts. The lamp is constructed around an elegant arched bronze framework, richly detailed with ribbed and incised ornamentation. At its centre rises a large stylised acanthus leaf rendered in relief, finished with a distinctive verdigris blue-green patina that contrasts beautifully with the warm brown tones of the surrounding bronze. The acanthus motif is repeated on both sides, allowing the lamp to be appreciated from multiple viewpoints and making it particularly effective as a freestanding accent or centrepiece. The rectangular plinth is bordered with a continuous band of classical foliate ornament, echoing the central acanthus motif and lending the piece a cohesive architectural character. The combination of classical ornament, sculptural metalwork and aged patination gives the lamp considerable decorative presence. The lamp is accompanied by a custom elongated quatrefoil-form shade in cream slub silk. Gently pleated and graduated from top to bottom, the shade produces a particularly warm and atmospheric glow when illuminated, while its unusual shape complements the architectural proportions of the bronze base. Attributed to maitland-smith on stylistic grounds, although no maker's label is present. Maitland-smith is particularly associated with richly decorative furnishings and lighting employing traditional metalworking, casting and hand-finishing techniques. The lamp has subsequently been rewired and fitted with its present shade. It remains in excellent overall condition, with attractive patination and minor signs of age and use consistent with its decorative character.
