Finely conceived on an intimate scale, the piece belongs to the celebrated tradition of Japanese decorative sculpture produced during a period of exceptional technical and artistic achievement. The seller identifies it as an antique original from Japan, executed in bronze, with an 1850–1899 age classification. The sculpture is modelled as a novelty miniature, demonstrating the Japanese fascination with capturing everyday subjects, characters and objects with remarkable precision. Despite its diminutive proportions, the composition possesses considerable sculptural presence, with carefully observed modelling giving the subject individuality and character. Bronze okimono flourished particularly during the Meiji era, when Japanese metalworkers increasingly produced highly detailed decorative sculptures both for the domestic market and for an expanding international clientele. Smaller examples such as this were intended for close appreciation and display within cabinets or alongside other precious objects. The naturally aged bronze surface contributes additional depth and character, highlighting the modelling while preserving the patina expected of an authentic late 19th-century Japanese object.
