The duchess is portrayed with finely defined powdered curls beneath a dramatic dark grey, wide-brimmed hat adorned with white and orange-red feather plumes. A crisp white fur stole frames her shoulders, while a delicate rose at her breast adds a refined touch of colour to the composition. Executed by hand on an oval porcelain plaque, the portrait demonstrates confident and accomplished brushwork, particularly evident in the delicately modelled facial features, elaborate hair, feathers and costume. The colours remain remarkably vivid, giving the portrait considerable depth and decorative presence. The plaque is housed within an elaborate rococo revival gilt frame, richly modelled with scrolling acanthus leaves, floral ornament and shell motifs. A finely beaded oval inner border surrounds the portrait, while the warm aged gilding and subtle tonal variation within the recesses enhance the sculptural quality of the frame. Of particular interest is the collector's identification label retained on the reverse, which reads: “devonshire — lady georgiana spencer, married 5th duke of devonshire, 1774. By t. Gainsborough.” the historic label records the traditional identification of the sitter and attribution of the source composition to gainsborough. The reverse also retains its black-painted backing board and aged hanging cord. Georgiana spencer (1757–1806), duchess of devonshire, was one of the most celebrated women of georgian britain. An aristocrat, society figure, political campaigner and influential fashion icon, her image became one of the most recognisable portraits of fashionable georgian society. During the 19th century, finely painted porcelain plaques reproducing celebrated historical portraits became desirable decorative objects, prized for the luminous quality of the porcelain surface and the remarkable level of detail achievable by skilled painters. Presented in good antique condition. The porcelain portrait remains vivid and well preserved, while the gilt frame displays attractive age-related wear and patination consistent with its period. An elegant and highly decorative example of 19th-century porcelain portraiture, combining accomplished hand painting, an imposing rococo revival frame and documented historic identification of one of georgian britain's most celebrated figures.
