about the designer and manufacturer
kathy still's design for rosenthal belongs to the manufacturer's tradition of collaborating with artists and designers to create distinctive decorative porcelain. Founded in 1879, rosenthal became internationally recognised for its progressive approach to design, particularly through studio-linie, established in 1961. The collection brought contemporary artistic ideas into porcelain production, extending the medium beyond traditional tableware.
design and historical context
the reiseimpressionen series explores different destinations through stylised cultural imagery. In "a visit to japan," kathy still combines a graphic representation of the japanese archipelago with flowing red and gold waves, a rising sun, pagoda imagery and decorative emblems reminiscent of traditional japanese family crests.
the rich palette of crimson, ivory, black and gold evokes japanese lacquerware, while the bold composition reflects the decorative experimentation of european postmodern design. The imagery continues around the sides of the box, creating a unified composition across its compact cylindrical form.
the box bears rosenthal studio-linie markings and kathy still's printed signature, identifying its place within the numbered collector's series.
