The table features the distinctive envelope-action top, with four triangular leaves that open out to transform the compact square table into a considerably larger playing surface measuring approximately 79.5 cm by 79.5 cm. Once opened, the interior reveals a green felt-lined playing surface arranged with multiple playing stations, creating an attractive and practical setting for cards and traditional games. This clever transformation is one of the defining characteristics of the envelope card table and allows the piece to remain remarkably compact when not in use. A useful single drawer is incorporated beneath the tabletop, providing convenient storage for playing cards, counters and other gaming accessories. The table is raised upon elegantly shaped cabriole legs with finely carved knees, demonstrating the quality of craftsmanship throughout. The legs are united by a shaped central stretcher incorporating a small circular shelf, an attractive decorative feature that adds both architectural interest and additional display space. The mahogany displays particularly attractive natural figuring throughout, enhanced by a rich, warm colour and established patina. Fine decorative detailing further complements the elegant form and gives the table considerable period character. When closed, the table measures only 56.5 cm square, making it exceptionally versatile as an occasional or side table. When required for entertaining, the envelope top opens to create a substantially larger dedicated games surface. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its early 20th-century origin. A highly desirable example of an English envelope card table, combining beautifully figured mahogany, an ingenious expanding top, green felt playing surface and elegant carved cabriole legs.
