…. A mid-century fine art print of an Amedeo Modigliani portrait, made on linen through a hands-on process using paint. The woven linen shows through the image, so the surface has the tooth and softness of a canvas, not the flat finish of a paper print. The signature appears in the upper right, as it does on the artist's own canvases.
The sitter is a young woman with dark brown hair pinned up and cut in short bangs, with the blank blue eyes, long neck and gentle oval face that mark Modigliani's late portraits. She wears a deep forest V-neck dress against a soft, mottled sage ground, with a darker vertical band at the right edge. The palette is quiet and works well in a library, a bedroom or a gallery wall of mixed portraits.
It is presented in a period frame of pale natural wood with a stepped profile and a cream painted outer edge. Overall size is 22.25 inches high by 17.25 inches wide by 1.25 inches deep.
About the artist: Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy, in 1884 and moved to Paris in 1906, where he became part of the Montparnasse avant-garde. He painted portraits of friends, artists, poets and models in elongated forms with almond-shaped, often blank eyes. He died in Paris in 1920 at the age of 35, before he found commercial success. His paintings are now held in major museum collections around the world.
The original: this print is after his "Portrait of a Young Woman," painted in 1918, in the last years of his life. The oil on canvas is in the collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art. The museum describes the figure as elongated in the mannerist manner, with a simplified, mask-like face, a button mouth and almond-shaped eyes. This listing is a print after that work and not an original painting.
Condition: lovingly used. The linen shows soft age toning, and the frame has the small nicks and softened edges expected of a period piece. Please see all photographs, including the corner detail.
