Vintage Middle Atlas Rug | Handwoven Wool Rug with Rosette Medallions on Terracotta
This vintage Middle Atlas rug centers on a navy cross-shaped medallion, richly detailed with tan and cream inner motifs, set against a warm terracotta field. Paired circular rosettes in navy and tan flank the central form above and below, each ringed with scalloped petals and marked at its heart with a small tribal symbol. Columns of four-petal floral motifs in navy, tan, and cream run down both sides, and a fine multi-band border frames the whole composition. Tiny animal and star figures are scattered between the larger forms.
Hand-knotted in thick wool pile in Morocco's Beni Mellal-Khénifra region of the Middle Atlas, this rug shows an ornate, floral side of the region's weaving. Its rosettes and cartouches are worked in close, careful detail, with a symmetry closer to formal medallion design than to looser abstraction. The mellowed terracotta ground and gently worn pile are marks of genuine age, built up over decades of use.
With its warm terracotta ground and finely worked rosettes, this vintage Middle Atlas rug is a genuine collector's piece for interiors that value ornate pattern, rich color, and authentic history.
Authentic Handmade Middle Atlas Craftsmanship
Each rug is hand-knotted using traditional Middle Atlas weaving techniques, in which Berber women build dense wool pile row by row directly on the loom. Here, the weaver worked a carefully balanced, mirrored composition, pairing a central cross medallion with rosettes and floral columns, each motif edged in fine navy outline and finished with delicate inner detail.
The soft fading, mellowed color, and gentle irregularities across the pile are genuine marks of age and handmade origin, each one a trace of the rug's long history.
Ideal for Warm & Traditional Interiors
This vintage Middle Atlas rug is well suited to living rooms, dining rooms, and libraries that want rich pattern and warmth underfoot.
Its terracotta, navy, and tan palette pairs beautifully with dark wood furniture, leather upholstery, and warm cream or deep green walls, making it a strong fit for traditional, layered, and collector-minded interiors looking for a genuine vintage centerpiece.
