This exceptional example of a late 19th-century Peking weaving showcases the refined taste characteristic of the period in a rare square format. The composition is defined by a striking central medallion and precise geometric borders, placing it among the most desirable antique rugs available today.

The masterful use of color is key to this square rug's enduring appeal. The expansive field is rendered in a mellow, aged tone, creating a sophisticated background. The primary ground color, a warm ivory beige cream, provides a subtle contrast to the stylized indigo cloud bands and the lighter blue secondary motifs that populate the corners and field.

Characteristic of the finest Chinese court weavings, the design employs a highly architectural symmetry within its square frame. The central medallion, surrounded by delicate floral sprays, is framed by a bold, angular key border. The spandrels feature elegant, sweeping scrollwork that balances the formality of the inner frame, resulting in a composition of quiet authority.

Retaining its remarkable clarity of design after more than a century, this piece is a testament to the quality of late Qing Dynasty craftsmanship. Its substantial square dimensions make it an ideal room size rug, capable of anchoring a formal drawing-room or a spacious library with its historical presence and subtle coloration. See less
