Distressed white marble rests on forged iron, with hammer marks remaining visible through the black finish.
An X-form stretcher ties the legs together low, an old blacksmith's answer to racking that reads as decoration now. The marble's soft veining and soft edges keep the piece from feeling precious - it wants to be used, not guarded.
At 58 inches wide and 14 deep, it fits behind a sofa or along an entry wall, and the 30 inch height keeps a lamp at a useful level. Stone up top, iron below - it will outlast the house around it.
