The caning itself is painted white to match, so the oval registers as a panel of fine texture rather than as a change of color.

It is a Louis XV side chair at heart, with an open cane oval and cabriole front legs, and a pale gray fabric seat that keeps the palette soft rather than stark. At 21 inches wide with a 19 inch seat height, it suits painted farm tables and formal rooms alike. The narrow frame lets six or eight run around a table without the backs touching at the corners.

White paint and pale gray cloth belong in a light room, against limed oak, plaster walls and seagrass or stone underfoot. In a darker paneled dining room the same chairs do the opposite job and lift the whole table. Two of them work either side of a console or at the foot of a bed, where the cabriole line can be seen without a table apron cutting across it. See less
