The white finish flattens the color and leaves the pattern to be read in shadow, which is where the carving does its work. A cream upholstered seat sits plainly beneath it, kept quiet against the busy back above.

At 17 inches wide, this is a small chair by design. It slides under a bistro table, works at a desk, and can be brought into a dining room that needs a few extra seats without adding visual weight. The narrow frame also lets a pair stand against a wall between two doorways, where a broader chair would look wedged into the gap.

White fretwork belongs in rooms with light on the walls, so think of a garden room, a painted breakfast room or a hallway with a mirror. It pairs with rattan, pale timber and glazed ceramic, and it holds its own against a strong wallpaper because the open back lets the pattern behind show through. Two flanking a console read as decoration as much as seating. See less
