A taupe fabric seat sits beneath it, close enough in tone to keep the whole chair quiet. It is a Louis XV shape without the usual French contrast of pale wood against natural cane.

Each chair measures 21 inches wide with a seat height of 19 inches, which clears a standard dining apron and works equally well at a desk or a dressing table. The narrow width lets six sit along a long table in comfort, and the open oval back keeps the sightline across a room clear even with a full set of chairs in place.

Gray and taupe suit a room built on limed oak, pale plaster or painted furniture, and the painted cane adds texture without introducing another color. Use a set around the dining table, or take a pair into a bedroom or a hall where two chairs are enough. They pair with linen, jute rugs and plain unpolished wood. See less
