Natural cane stands out against a driftwood finish, with deep charcoal upholstery grounding the pale woven back. It is the darkest and most graphic reading of the Louis XV shape, and the pale weave stands out all the more for the gray-brown wood around it. The bones stay classic, an oval cane back in a carved beechwood surround.
Cabriole front legs and a shaped apron carry the period line through the lower half of the chair. Each one is 21 inches wide and 24 inches deep with a seat height of 19 inches, comfortable proportions for long dinners and easy to pull up in numbers when the table has to stretch. The open back keeps a row of six from reading as a solid barrier across a small room.
Driftwood and charcoal suit a room working in grays and naturals rather than warm browns, so these sit well with a limed oak table, a pale rug and unlined linen at the windows. The cane supplies pattern that is structural rather than applied, which is useful where the walls are plain. A single chair also holds a desk or a dressing table without looking as though it wandered off.
