The combination is light in every direction: light wood, light cane, light stance. The cane is left natural, so it sits a shade warmer than the frame and gives the back some depth when the light comes across it.

Below the cane, a cream linen seat keeps the palette to sun washed neutrals and gives the frame something soft to sit against. Each chair measures 20 inches wide, 23 inches deep and 35 inches high, and the rearward rake of the back legs gives diners an easy, slightly reclined sit. The modest height keeps the backs below eye level across an open room.

Bleached oak and cane belong in rooms that stay bright: a coastal dining room, a garden room with plenty of glass, a kitchen finished in pale stone. They soften a modern table and lighten a heavy one, and they carry a linen rug or a jute one equally well. Two will serve at a desk or a hall table where a full dining set would be too much. See less
