The Shape of Silence Handmade Perforated Pedestal Bowl & Ceramic Sculptures — Set of 6
DESCRIPTION
1. Openwork, Pierced, and Reticulated Ceramics
The Technique: The defining feature of the central pedestal bowl—and the intricate negative-space patterns visible across the groupings—is reticulation (or openwork/piercing).
The Archive: Historically, reticulation has roots in ancient ceramic traditions (such as classical Chinese Linglong or "devil's work" grain-of-rice porcelain, and ancient Roman/Persian pierced vessels). In mid-century and contemporary studio pottery, artists revived it to emphasize architectural structure, shadowplay, and the tension between mass and void.
2. Organic Brutalism / Organic Modernism
The Aesthetic: The rough, heavily textured surfaces, exposed grog (coarse clay particles), earthy speckling, and asymmetrical or faceted geometries (seen in the multi-sided trays and dishes) belong to Organic Brutalism or Organic Modernism.
The Trade Description: In decorative arts and high-end interior design trade archives, this style is often described as earthy mineralism or naturalistic studio pottery. It values raw, tactile surfaces that mimic natural geological formations, weathered stone, tree bark, or volcanic crusts over smooth, industrial perfection.
3. Mid-Century to Contemporary Studio Craft (The British & American Lineage)
The Visual Echo: The restrained, textured glazes (mottled metallic patinas, matte white/stone oxides, and deep copper-greens) and faceted plate designs strongly echo the traditions championed by post-war studio ceramicists—such as British masters of form and texture like Peter Lane (known for his pioneering pierced porcelain and textured stoneware) and the broader lineage of Leach-influenced or sculptural vessel makers who moved ceramics away from strictly utilitarian tableware into fine art objects

THE SHAPE OF SILENCE is a curated collection of six original handmade ceramic artworks exploring the relationship between sculptural form, negative space, texture, and architectural design.
Created by an independent ceramic artist under the name MANA CERAMICS, each artwork is individually shaped, glazed, and finished by hand.
At the center of the collection is an extraordinary perforated pedestal bowl, distinguished by its intricate circular cutouts, elevated silhouette, and expressive sculptural construction.
Unlike a conventional ceramic bowl, this centerpiece requires substantially more time, precision, and craftsmanship. The numerous circular openings introduce additional complexity to the ceramic form, creating an architectural interplay of light, shadow, and negative space.
The pedestal bowl is complemented by five smaller original ceramic sculptures featuring geometric silhouettes, spiral designs, earthy glazes, and delicately speckled surfaces.
Together, the six artworks form a cohesive collection designed for sophisticated interiors, sculptural tabletop arrangements, and collectors of original contemporary ceramics.
