A striking Japanese cloisonne enamel vase from the Meiji period, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890. Standing 10 inches tall, the vase features a rich red ground and an elegant gourd shaped silhouette, with a generously rounded body rising through a slender waist to a rounded upper neck.
Coiling dragons encircle the body, their sinuous forms following the vase’s curved surface. Fine wirework defines their individual scales, expressive faces, flowing whiskers, and outstretched claws. Ivory, pale blue, soft pink, gray, and deep blue enamels contrast beautifully with the red background, emphasizing the movement and detail of the composition.
A pointed petal border frames the mouth, while the spreading foot features intricate multicolored floral and geometric ornament. Broad areas of red enamel allow the dragons to stand out, giving the vase a bold presence when viewed from different angles.
