An exceptional and unusually shaped Japanese cloisonne enamel covered jar from the Meiji period (1868–1912), distinguished by its rare pumpkin-shaped form, beautifully lobed spherical body, elaborate phoenix decoration, and richly detailed ornamental panels against a deep, lustrous enamel ground.
Measuring approximately 6 inches in height, width, and depth, this remarkable covered jar features a wonderfully proportioned, rounded pumpkin form with gently defined vertical lobes, a fitted domed cover, and three small rounded feet. The cover is surmounted by a spherical finial delicately decorated with a floral motif, providing an elegant finishing touch to the overall composition.
The body is decorated with a series of large, shield-shaped reserves featuring elaborate stylized phoenix birds set against richly textured goldstone enamel grounds. The goldstone decoration creates a beautiful shimmering effect, with countless tiny metallic flecks producing a warm golden brilliance against the darker surrounding enamels. The phoenixes are rendered in intricate wirework with gracefully extended wings, elaborate feather patterns, and richly ornamented bodies.
Separating the principal panels are elaborate vertical ornamental motifs incorporating stylized floral elements, scrolling arabesques, and decorative pendants in muted shades of coral red, green, blue, cream, and warm brown. These intricate details create a beautifully balanced composition, emphasizing the rounded contours and distinctive lobed construction of the vessel.
The upper portion is particularly elaborate, featuring a continuous band of chrysanthemums and scrolling foliage above an intricate geometric border inspired by traditional Japanese decorative patterns. The chrysanthemums, executed in delicate shades of soft pink and peach, contrast beautifully with the darker enamel ground and surrounding foliage.
The fitted domed cover continues the floral decoration of the body, creating a harmonious transition to the spherical finial. The finial itself is decorated with a small blossom, demonstrating the attention given to even the smallest elements of the design.
The pumpkin-shaped form is an especially appealing feature of this piece. Unlike conventional cylindrical or globular cloisonne vessels, the gently lobed body introduces a sculptural quality that enhances the decorative panels and gives the jar a distinctive architectural presence. The combination of its unusual shape, elaborate ornamentation, and richly colored enamelwork makes it a particularly attractive example of Japanese decorative artistry.
The use of goldstone enamel is another noteworthy characteristic. Its shimmering metallic appearance adds depth and visual richness to the phoenix panels, creating a striking contrast with the darker ground and delicately colored floral decoration.
During the Meiji period, Japanese cloisonne artists developed increasingly sophisticated techniques and imaginative vessel forms, combining traditional symbolism with extraordinary technical precision. This covered jar reflects that artistic tradition through its elaborate decorative program, carefully balanced proportions, and unusual sculptural form.
A highly decorative and collectible example of Japanese Meiji period cloisonne enamelwork, distinguished by its rare pumpkin-shaped body, richly detailed phoenix panels, shimmering goldstone decoration, and beautifully integrated fitted cover.
