An exquisite miniature Japanese cloisonne enamel moonflask vase from the Meiji period (1868–1912), measuring just 3 inches in height and distinguished by its elegant flattened circular form, richly colored translucent red enamel panels, and elaborate decoration featuring a mythical dragon and phoenix against a magnificent deep midnight blue ground.
Despite its diminutive size, this remarkable miniature moonflask exhibits an impressive degree of artistic refinement and decorative complexity. Its beautifully proportioned flattened globular body rises from a gracefully flared pedestal foot to a short, slender neck terminating in an outward-flaring copper rim. The distinctive moonflask silhouette, inspired by traditional East Asian vessel forms, provides an elegant canvas for the intricate enamel decoration.
The two principal faces are decorated with large, shaped reserves filled with luminous translucent ruby red enamel, each framed by delicate cream-colored borders. One side depicts a spirited mythical dragon with a sinuous body, curling tail, and finely articulated claws, reaching toward a flaming pearl. Rendered in warm brown, green, and gold tones, the dragon symbolizes power, wisdom, and good fortune.
The opposing panel features a beautifully detailed mythical phoenix surrounded by elaborate scrolling foliage. Its graceful wings, flowing feathers, and intricately rendered body are executed in contrasting shades of green, ivory, brown, and gold. Together, the dragon and phoenix represent two of the most celebrated creatures in East Asian decorative arts, traditionally associated with harmony, prosperity, and auspicious fortune.
Surrounding the central reserves is an exceptionally rich midnight blue enamel ground, decorated throughout with delicate pale yellow chrysanthemums and intricate ivory-colored scrolling vines. This elaborate floral ornamentation continues seamlessly around the narrow sides, neck, and pedestal foot, demonstrating the care devoted to every surface of the vessel.
Particularly striking is the contrast between the deep opaque blue enamel and the brilliant translucent red reserves. The red enamel possesses a luminous quality that enhances the mythical compositions, while the surrounding floral scrollwork creates a sophisticated balance of color, movement, and ornament.
The moonflask form is especially appealing in miniature, combining the architectural elegance of a traditional flattened vessel with the technical precision required to execute such intricate enamel decoration on a remarkably small scale.
A charming and highly collectible example of Japanese Meiji period cloisonne enamelwork, distinguished by its unusual miniature moonflask shape, elaborate dragon and phoenix imagery, beautiful translucent enamels, and richly detailed floral decoration.
