Modelled in a stylised modernist form, the figure conveys the animal's weight through a pronounced dorsal hump, sturdy legs, and outward-sweeping pale yellow horns. Finely painted lines detail the beard, facial contours, and hooves, giving the creature an expressive and animated character. Contrasting with the earthy, mottled brown texturing of the forequarters and spine, the smooth cream flanks are embellished with delicate hand-painted floral motifs. Open wild blossom blooms in muted shades of salmon pink, soft yellow, and greyish blue trail across both sides on slender green foliage. This striking juxtaposition of rugged wild beast and gentle decorative florals reflects the whimsical studio ceramic traditions championed by Matthews. Turned over, the hollow underside reveals the glazed belly, unglazed foot pads, and a small firing vent. The maker's signature, ""Basil Matthews"", is painted by hand in dark slip across the lower body. In scale, this is an impressive study from the Welsh artist, standing 12 cm in height and measuring 20 cm in length from nose to tail, offering substantial presence on a shelf or mantelpiece. See less
