Moulded in heavy earthenware, this characterful animal figure depicts a rotund pig resting on its short forelegs with the hindquarters tucked closely underneath. The entire exterior is coated in a rich, honey-amber treacle glaze that gathers into deeper chestnut-brown tones within the recessed folds of the neck, snout, and small upright ears. A delicate, all-over network of fine glaze crazing covers the smooth surface, producing the distinctive crackled patina characteristic of traditional late nineteenth-century lead-glazed Victorian ceramic wares. The press-moulded composition gives the pig a notably contented countenance, featuring pronounced jowls, an upturned snout with moulded nostrils, and gently indented eyes. Produced primarily as a rustic mantlepiece ornament or decorative farmhouse accent, the hollow earthenware body retains sufficient ceramic weight and stability to serve as an occasional cottage doorstop. The generous, bulbous curves showcase the natural flow of the molten slip glaze, which pooled unevenly during the firing to create attractive tonal mottling across both flanks and along the spine.
Manufactured in England circa 1890, the figure exemplifies late Victorian earthenware production, commonly associated with the Staffordshire potteries and related regional commercial workshops. The completely flat, unglazed underside reveals a pale buff-coloured earthenware body, bearing a single pierced circular vent hole designed to release steam and prevent cracking inside the bottle kiln. As was standard practice for utilitarian decorative ceramics of this class and period, the model was produced and sold without any factory backstamps or painted maker signatures. Preserved in intact original condition, the earthenware displays no chips, hairline fractures, glaze flaking, or later restoration. Typical historical manufacturing irregularities are visible upon close inspection, including tiny pinholes, minor glaze skips along the lower base rim, and small specks of embedded kiln debris beneath the glossy topcoat.
Measuring 18 cm in length, 10 cm in height, and 9 cm in width, this tactile ornament retains an attractive glass-like sheen that catches natural light across its rounded body.
