This exquisite Chinese Peking carpet exemplifies the refined aesthetic of the 1920s, a period when traditional Asian weaving began incorporating subtle Art Deco influences. The expansive field, rendered in luminous ivory beige cream tones, provides a perfect canvas for the scattered, symbolic motifs.

Unlike earlier densely patterned Chinese rugs, this piece utilizes negative space masterfully, a feature that makes it ideal for contemporary interiors requiring a substantial room size rug. The motifs are rendered as individual, almost floating vignettes—stylized vases, ritual objects, and abstract geometric shapes—each carefully placed to maintain balance.

The palette is remarkably restrained, featuring soft pastels like pale mauve, sky blue, and ochre, which prevent the design from overwhelming the delicate background. Peking rugs from this era are renowned for their high-quality wool and soft, pliable handle, having been specifically tailored for the burgeoning Western luxury market.

The border is understated, featuring a simple dotted guard stripe and stylized corner spandrels (rinceaux) that frame the composition without competing with the central field. This carpet is a testament to the sophisticated weaving traditions of early 20th-century China and remains a superb example among fine antique rugs. See less
