The decoration draws … Read more Intricate geometric fretwork and stylised lotus palmettes cover the exterior of this straight-sided demitasse can and saucer. The decoration draws heavily on Aesthetic Movement interest in Middle Eastern and Persian motifs, combining deep cobalt blue reserves with warm iron-red enamels, turquoise highlights, and extensive gilded scrollwork. Fine dotted borders delineate each angular segment across the exterior. The cup interior is finished with a wide border echoing the exterior fret patterns, leading down to a gilded radial motif hand-painted at the base of the well. Matching the cylindrical cup, the saucer is arranged into alternating cartouches of floral sprays and gilded scrolls against cobalt grounds, all radiating outward from a central roundel encircled by rope-twist gilding and framed by an ornate gilded rim.

Produced under the Grosvenor trade name and attributed to the Staffordshire firm Jackson & Gosling, this set is painted in Pattern 710, a number inscribed in iron red on the underside of the saucer. The cup bears an underglaze painter mark to the base. Such finely detailed cabinet wares were produced around 1890 to cater to the fashionable late Victorian taste for luxurious coffee and demitasse services.

Standing 5.5 cm high, the cup sits comfortably on its matching dished saucer. The porcelain body remains bright and intact, showing no chips, cracks, or visible repairs, while the enamels and gold leaf retain excellent surface gloss and definition with minimal handling wear. See less
