An exceptionally rare and unusually large Japanese cloisonne enamel box of the Nagoya School, dating to the Meiji period, circa 1880–1900. Distinguished by its extraordinary decoration of traditional Japanese theatrical and mythical masks, brilliant polychrome enamels, and elaborate floral ornamentation, this remarkable box represents a particularly imaginative expression of Japanese decorative artistry.
Measuring an impressive 7 inches wide, 6 inches deep, and 3 inches high, the box features an elegant rectangular form with softly rounded corners, a gently domed hinged lid, and gilt metal mounts.
The lid presents a fascinating and highly unusual composition of Japanese theatrical and mythical masks, incorporating imagery reminiscent of traditional Noh and Kyogen theater, folklore, and supernatural figures. Each mask possesses its own distinctive character, with exaggerated facial features, expressive eyes, curling mustaches, and dramatically rendered expressions.
The masks appear in a striking palette of lavender, golden yellow, reddish brown, turquoise, and green. Their expressions range from humorous and mischievous to fierce and supernatural, reflecting the rich visual traditions of Japanese theater and mythology.
Particularly impressive is the imaginative arrangement of the composition. Rather than presenting the masks in a conventional symmetrical pattern, the artist has created a lively interplay of overlapping decorative fields, combining theatrical and mythical imagery with scrolling clouds, stylized foliage, geometric patterns, and brilliantly colored enamel grounds.
The surrounding border features a continuous arrangement of stylized scrolling motifs, while the sides are richly decorated with elaborate floral compositions, scrolling vines, and geometric botanical designs in pink, turquoise, cobalt blue, ivory, and reddish brown.
The extraordinary variety of enamel colors and intricate wirework demonstrates the technical sophistication associated with the Nagoya School during the Meiji period.
Nagoya was one of the most important centers of Japanese cloisonne production during the late 19th century, producing works celebrated for their brilliant coloration, elaborate ornamentation, and increasingly sophisticated enamel techniques.
What makes this particular example especially compelling is its unusual subject matter. While floral arrangements, birds, landscapes, and traditional auspicious symbols dominate much of Meiji cloisonne production, elaborate compositions devoted to theatrical and mythical masks represent a distinctive departure from conventional decorative themes.
The substantial proportions further distinguish this box from the smaller ornamental boxes and trinket containers more commonly encountered.
The combination of its impressive size, extraordinary subject matter, brilliant enamel palette, and intricate craftsmanship makes this an exceptional example of Japanese Meiji decorative art, equally suited to a distinguished collection or an elegant interior.
