This exceptional piece exemplifies the grandeur of early 20th-century Chinese weaving, specifically the Peking tradition. The deep, saturated field provides a dramatic backdrop for the highly stylized mythological creatures, distinguishing it among antique rugs.

The commanding presence of this textile is largely due to its rich, near-midnight indigo field. This profound shade of blue color rugs serves to elevate the intricate gold and ochre detailing of the central and corner figures. These motifs—including powerful dragons and the majestic Fenghuang (Chinese phoenix)—are rendered with dynamic movement, symbolizing imperial power and good fortune.

A wide, luminous border in shades of rust and soft gold frames the central panel, offering a striking contrast to the dark field. This border is adorned with delicate, scattered floral sprays and symbolic objects, softening the intensity of the mythological figures within the main field. The high-quality wool and dense knotting speak to the superior craftsmanship typical of the finest workshops of the era.

Designed for a substantial interior, this Peking Chinese rug offers both historical weight and decorative versatility. Its impressive scale ensures it functions perfectly as a focal point in a formal dining room or grand salon. Such generously proportioned room size rugs are highly sought after for their ability to anchor a sophisticated design scheme while introducing authentic Asian heritage. See less
