This magnificent example of early 20th-century weaving showcases the sophisticated design language characteristic of Chinese rugs from this period. The composition balances traditional motifs with a modern, open aesthetic favored during the Art Deco era.

The deep, saturated field color—a rich red transitioning into a vibrant red hue—provides a dramatic backdrop for the delicate ornamentation. The design is dominated by scattered, naturalistic floral motifs, typical of floral rugs design, featuring large peonies and blossoming branches that appear to float across the expanse.

Elegant vases placed at the top and bottom anchor the field, while subtle avian figures flit among the foliage, lending movement to the scene. The border employs a classic Chinese fretwork or meander pattern, providing a structured frame that contrasts beautifully with the organic forms within. This piece represents the finest quality of antique rugs produced for the Western market during the interwar period.

Woven entirely in wool, the pile retains a luxurious, soft texture that speaks to its age and careful preservation. Its generous proportions classify it as a true room size rug, making it an ideal focal point for a grand living space or formal dining room where its rich red color and elegant pattern can be fully appreciated.
