This magnificent square example of late Qing Dynasty weaving presents a striking, expansive field of rich camel wool. The sophisticated design aesthetic is characteristic of Chinese rugs produced for the export market during this period, blending traditional motifs with Western scale requirements.

The generous dimensions classify this square piece as a true room size carpet, designed to anchor a major living space. The composition is centered by a large, intricate medallion featuring traditional Shou symbols and geometric fretwork, surrounded by four secondary circular motifs echoing the central theme.

The color story relies on high contrast, pairing the warm, luminous camel field with deep accents of navy and lighter cerulean. The extensive use of the blue color in the border provides a crisp frame, highlighting the subtle floral sprays and corner spandrels that soften the overall square geometry.

Woven entirely in high-quality, lustrous wool, this piece is a testament to the enduring artistry of the Peking workshops. It remains an exceptional decorative acquisition for collectors seeking authentic antique rugs that define late 19th-century elegance and craftsmanship. See less
