This is an exquisitely crafted carved lacquer box, featuring deep, intricate relief work in a rich, vermilion red. The circular box and its domed lid are heavily carved with traditional motifs. The top lid depicts a dynamic scene of a figure riding a mythical Qilin (or Kirin) through a stylized landscape, surrounded by swirling clouds and rock formations. The carving is executed with fine detail against a textured, geometric background.
The sides of both the lid and the base are decorated with a continuous, deeply carved scrolling vine and floral pattern, separated by smooth, polished red bands at the rims.
The interior of the box is lined with a dark, crackled black surface. On the flat, black underside of the base, there is a recessed rectangular seal containing four characters. The deep carving and rich color give this piece a striking, sculptural presence. It serves as a stunning decorative accent or a luxurious storage vessel for jewelry and small treasures.

The carved lacquer exterior is largely intact with a beautiful, deep red color and some natural surface wear, minor scratches, and slight fading in the deepest crevices, which adds depth and character. The interior black lacquer shows significant crazing (crackle texture) typical of aged lacquer. The seal on the base is clear. The structural integrity of the box and lid appears solid. Please review all photos carefully for a detailed view of the condition. less
