This is a striking and substantial pair of guardian lion figures, crafted using the traditional cloisonné enamel technique. The lions are depicted in a traditional seated, protective pose with expressive, open-mouthed faces, flowing curly manes, and muscular bodies. The male lion on the right rests his paw on a decorated ball, while the female on the left rests hers on a cub.
The bodies are covered in a vibrant red enamel, intricately detailed with colorful, wire-outlined floral and scrolling vine motifs in shades of blue, green, yellow, and white. The highly detailed faces, manes, chest harnesses with bells, paws, and tails are rendered in polished, gold-toned metal, creating a beautiful contrast with the bright red enamel.
