A carved lattice panel sits beneath an inset glass top, so the openwork shows while the surface stays clear and level. Below the stepped, molded edge, the apron carries three carved panels of scrolling vine and foliage, and the square legs stay plain so the carving does the talking. At 63 inches long, it has the proportions of the Chinese center tables once set in the middle of a reception hall.

In a room today, it works wherever you want a substantial table that does not block the view. Float it in front of a sofa, or let it anchor a wide entry or a library. Because you can walk all the way around it, it also suits a dining nook or a studio as a writing table. The dark wood sits easily with plaster walls, painted lacquer and rattan, and the glass keeps it reading as light.
