The apron is pierced through, so light shows between the carved branches, leaves and small figures that fill it, and it has a swell at one end shaped like a cartouche. The drawer fronts carry carved scrolls with brass lock plates, and a plain center panel sits between them. The legs are square and finely fluted, and the surface shows seams, knots and a lived-in finish.

The look is rustic on purpose. Altar tables stood against the wall of a Chinese home, holding incense, candles and offerings, and the form still works as a console today. At 41.5 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 32 inches tall, it fits behind a sofa, in an entry, or along a dining room wall. The drawers hold keys and papers, and the carved apron gives the room something to look at.
