Look closely and the tendrils curl into tiny leaves and scattered dots, held in place by fine black and white banding along both edges. Not all inlay is created equal. Cutting, fitting and setting this many small pieces cleanly takes many hours of skilled artisan work, and it shows in the way the pattern keeps its line around the whole circle.

At 36 inches across, it is large enough to anchor a console, a mantel or the end of a hallway, and its pale tone brightens a darker wall. It pairs easily with white plaster, rattan, black iron and natural linen. Inlay of this kind belongs to a long Indian tradition of setting fine patterns into wood by hand.
