An exceptionally rare and well preserved late 19th C patriotic artifact. This striking, finely lithographed tin features the iconic Great Seal of the United States in a variation originally rendered by the Washington DC lithographer Andrew B Graham. This design was commissioned by the US Department of State around 1890 which is when this tin plaque dates to.
While most surviving examples are chromlithographs on paper this premium variant is a die cut lithograph in shaped tin shield mounted on a fumed oak frame. The vibrant colors and sharp details showcase the Bald Eagle clutching an olive branch and 13 arrows, below a brilliant cloud constellation of 13 stars representing the original 13 States. Fine intact gilt detailing and overall crisp and sharp.
