This exquisite example of late Qing Dynasty weaving represents the pinnacle of Chinese courtly textile art. The piece is a magnificent find among antique rugs, showcasing the technical mastery and refined aesthetic of the Peking workshops just prior to the turn of the century.

The field is dominated by a saturated, deep indigo hue, providing a dramatic backdrop for the delicate, scattered floral sprays. These individual blossoms, rendered in soft ivory and pale gold tones, create an elegant, floating effect across the expansive canvas. This particular shade of midnight blue color rugs was highly prized in imperial Chinese production for its depth and richness.

Beyond its artistic merit, the rug's substantial dimensions classify it as a true large oversized big rug. Pieces of this scale were typically commissioned for grand halls or formal reception areas, offering both visual splendor and grounding presence. The generous size allows the allover floral pattern to breathe, preventing the motifs from feeling crowded.

The complex border system frames the central design with precision, utilizing layers of scrolling vines and classic geometric patterns. Notably, the innermost guard border features the distinctive interlocking meander, often referred to as the greek Key running dog motif. This detail reinforces the rug's classical pedigree, harmonizing traditional Chinese symbolism with sophisticated design structure. See less
